Hello! It’s been a while. I haven’t been doing much blogging on my own website since I moved to Toronto, but I’ve been writing for clients and sometimes your personal stuff gets pushed to the back burner. I’ll spare you further excuses and get to the point…
I want to do more creative writing just because (as opposed to the stuff that pays my bills). I find it incredibly fulfilling even though it’s not filling my pockets (yet). And so I’ve decided to start a creative writing group in Toronto, just like the one I had back in Vancouver, which was really fun. I’ve spoken to quite a few old friends and new ones here who seem to be interested so we’ll see how it goes. It will be open to strangers as well, so don’t be afraid to come out!
Here’s the format:
- Meet one evening a month at a local bar/cafe (manageable for most schedules and beverage preferences)
- Do 10-minute, on-the-spot creative writing exercises (perhaps using the book pictured above)
- Provide a prompt at each meeting for members to take home (they can bring their finished pieces to the next meeting for feedback)
- Allow members to bring other pieces of writing for feedback and discussion
What types of creative writing will we be doing?
Write Club in Vancouver was pretty open format, with all kinds of writing and all levels of writers, from beginner to professional. We wrote poetry, short stories and other things. I’d like to do the same thing with this group. Any type of creative writing is allowed. I’m thinking shorter formats will be more manageable for feedback purposes, but you could also bring chapters or sections of your writing to share.
Join us at our next meeting!
The next scheduled Toronto creative writing group meeting will be held at 8pm on Thursday, March 26th at Insomnia on Bloor near Bathurst. It’s $5 martini night (woo!) and they have cheap snacks too. We won’t do a prompt ahead of time for this one but we will do some live writing exercises and mostly we will just get to know one another. Please bring your desired writing utensils plus anything you’d like to share.
If you are interested, please email me at email@example.com.
Hope you can come out!
