A New Blogging Medium

I have been blogging for a long time. Nine years, to be exact. I will even shamelessly share one of my very first posts: an in-depth review of a Snoop Doggy Dogg concert in May 2005. (Full disclosure: many of the posts on that blog are crap and full of mistakes and immature opinions, but I’m not ashamed of where I came from and we all gotta start somewhere.) Since those days I’ve started and killed many a blog, and several companies have even paid me to blog for them. Imagine that!

Just like my blogging skills, the act of blogging itself has come a long way. What began as not much more than angsty teen rants has morphed into a viable way for writers and wannabes to build influence, drive business and even make money by publishing their words on their weblogs.

Medium: a new kind of blogging platform

Many blogging platforms have emerged over the years, from the one I first used (Blogspot) to WordPress to a brand new one I discovered just the other day called Medium (thanks to this post that appeared in my Facebook feed).

Writing an Ebook: A Quick How-To Guide

The Vegan Project recently published its first ebook. Here's a quick how-to guide.

How many of you have been dying to add ‘Author’ to your professional accomplishments? Thanks to advancements in online publishing, it’s easier than ever to write, publish, package and sell your words and pictures without having to send off a manuscript to a publisher and wait in anguish, only to never hear a peep back and have your literary dreams literally crushed.

Here’s a story about how some Vancouver bloggers figured out how to write and publish an ebook, and how you can do it too!

I’m Starting a Creative Writing Group in Vancouver!

Hi friends, writers, aspiring writers, creatives, and fun people who like to congregate around shared interests over drinks:

I have been talking about this for a while, and now I think it’s time: I’m starting a creative writing group in Vancouver!

Who can join? Anyone who likes to write.

When and where will we meet? Every two weeks on Wednesday evenings at a local drinking establishment, preferably with big tables and not too much noise.

What will happen? At each meeting, we’ll each take turns presenting the group with a creative prompt. This could be a piece of art, a piece of writing, a word, an object–anything. Group members will then use that prompt to inspire a piece of writing. For example, I might present a prompt like this amazing new blog I found called Stories About Prince. You could then take that prompt and write your own story about Prince, a poem about Prince, or a story about purple rain. Anything! Then, at our next meeting, we can share what we wrote, or just chat about our writing projects in general.

Aside from the above general guidelines, there are no rules. Nothing is a wrong answer, and I promise I won’t be playing spelling and grammar police. It’s all about fun and creativity.

Join us!

The first meeting will be held:

Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 7pm at The Morrissey Pub, 1227 Granville Street (between Davie and Drake)

Please let me know in the comments or via email at jessica@jessicagrey.com if you’re coming so we can secure a big enough table.

Hope to see you there!
